Pirate Ship Colours

by Natalia Aira
(Spain)

Here´s a very good game to teach colours to very small kids.

You use hula-hoops of different colours and pretend they are a pirate ships.

The teacher or one of the kids is a shark. So the shark (or the teacher) has to say a colour and the kids have to go in the hoop of that colour before the shark eats them.

If a pirate gets bitten by a shark they become a shark and have to get the other pirates. This game can also be used for primary.

Another way to play this pirate ship game

We also play a game like this, we have the King of the Fishies who is usually a parent or teacher or could be another child - and the King will tell the other fish which colored hoop to go to.

We start it by saying "Swim, fishies, swim!" - and the kids all have to pretend they are fish and move about and around the hula hoops, and then the King shouts "Shark! - Blue!" or something like that, and all the kids race into the correct hoop.

Our shark usually tickles the Fishies! Also, at the end of the game, the last child left is crowned King - or could be Queen, of course. Then they can decide if they want to be king or queen - or maybe they can choose if they want to be the shark next time.
