1,2,3 Star The game is called 1, 2, 3, STAR! It's like red light green light only with actions. It's for groups of 3 or more. Have them all lined up on one wall while you stand at the opposite wall. Turn around and count to three and when you turn around quickly yell out an action (One... two... three... DANCE!) and all of them have to do the action. If you catch someone not doing the right action send them back to the beginning. The one who touches you first gets to try counting. Kate, Italy
Scarecrow Tiggy Run around - and if the person who is "it" touches you, you must stand still, legs apart, arms out like a scarecrow. Other children running around can crawl through their legs to release them. Pinky, Australia
Guess the letter I am trying to teach alphabet writing to my daughter. I trace the alphabet on her back & ask her to guess. She enjoys it a lot & also learns. Pooja, India
Hot, cold I play with my children a game called hot, cold and we hide a toy and if they are close we say hot and if they're not close to the toy we say cold. :) Beatriz, United States
Car animal game This is a game we play in the car. I have 2 boys ages 5 & 6 who love animals. We call this game the Animal Game.
The person with the next birthday goes first. That person then gives 3 clues to an animal and the others guess what kind.
At first we did easy animals but now that my boys are learning more they are specific on what kind of animal. Its fun to try to stump each other! Allie, United States
The shopping game The shopping game is great, it can be played with just two people or many more. All you have to do is say i went to the shops and bought a ... then the next person has to remember what each person bought and then add another thing.
It can get very funny when you have a few items to remember. Charlotte, United Kingdom
Trampoline memory game Get on the trampoline and each person does a trick.
For example: Abby and Lacey and Brooke get on the tramp. Then Brooke does a trick and then Abby does that trick of Brooke's and her own and you see how far they can go. Madeline
Name Game A game I play with my 5 year old son and my 4 year old daughter is that we play the Name Game. We decide if it is going to be boy's names or girl's names and then, taking turns, we go through the alphabet saying a name that begins with that letter. It is terrific for car trips and keeps their minds active. Ali, United States
Freeze dance Turn on their favorite song and start dancing. When the music stops you have to freeze and don't move. Then turn the music back on and begin dancing again. Switch up the songs for different types of dancing. Bree, Canada
Catch me if you can I play a game with the kids when I babysit called Catch Me If You Can. I tell them that the couches and their beds are a safe zone, and you can't be tagged there.
One person is appointed the tagger, and tries to catch everyone else. If you are tagged, then you must hold hands with the tagger, and you are now another tagger!
You have to try and get everyone out. You can add a twist to it by only allowing a certain amount of steps or a time limit. Heidi, United States
Practise with sign language Use sign language of the deaf community to teach vocabulary in any language teaching programme. Sign language is very visual and intuitive and children grasp the signs and copy them instantly. It is not necessary to be an expert on sign language, it is enough to have a good illustrated book for children where the most elementary and intuitive signs are shown. Eugenio, Spain
Shoe match-up Hide separated pairs of shoes around the house or room. Send the kids off to find the shoes and match them up. You can do the same thing with socks or mittens. Ann, UK
Teaching directions game When teaching them directions draw a maze in chalk on the driveway and then blindfold them and give them directions to get through the maze. You can also reverse the situation so that they have to provide you with directions. Donna, United States
Story telling When I read a book to my 5 years old son sometimes I propose to him to actively participate by "reading" the picture. He describes what he sees instead of listening passively to the story. I then ask him to tell me what he thinks will happen in the story before reading the actual end of the story. Maria, Greece
