Halloween party games for kids

Monster statues

Along the lines of Musical Statues, you'll need some fun Halloween music and some space for the kids to dance about in.

Start the music and get the kids stomping about. When the music stops - the kids must freeze! If any of them move - they're out. Children that are out can help judge the next round.

Halloween costume parade

Why not hold a kids' halloween costume parade?

Kids can show off their Halloween costumes, by parading down the length of the party room one by one. You can give prizes for the scariest, prettiest, most stylish or most imaginative.

Alternatively, hold a best dressed pumpkin competition!

You might be very crafty with real or plastic pumpkins for the kids to decorate; or you may prefer to cut out pumpkin shapes from orange card and provide the children with stickers, pens and glitter to make a best-dressed pumpkin.

Bobbing for apples

A traditional Halloween party game for kids. You'll need a large tub filled with water, and plenty of apples tipped in to bob around on the surface.

Each child tries to grab an apple with their mouth from the tub. It's messy, it's wet... so you might need to wrap a towel round their shoulders first, particularly if they're wearing a Halloween costume!

You can dish out prizes for success, or just for effort! And if bobbing for the apples is a bit too hard for the smaller ones - why not get a net and let them fish for the apples?

Pin the nose/hat/wart/broomstick on the witch

Or of course, you could pin the mouth on the pumpkin. Or the wand onto Harry Potter's hand... or the door on the haunted house. A classic kid party game with a Halloween twist.

Here are three games I chose and printed out for myself in minutes - and they're all ideal for kids:

Monster Match

Broomstick relay

If you have enough children, divide them into two teams. Each team has a broomstick - which could be the real thing made from twigs if you're brave, or a broomstick handle of the modern variety.. or even some rolled up newspapers covered with brown paper and twigs of card stuck on the bottom!

The kids have to "ride" on their broomsticks to the end of the course and back again, then pass the broomstick to the next child in their team, the first team to finish being the winners.

You could design a small obstacle course if you have room, which could include

  • pumpkins to jump over
  • a dress-up element, such as monster gloves or witch nose/wig to put on as they start and take off before they pass the broomstick on
  • throwing an apple, or a plastic frog or snake into a bucket and saying abracadabra...
  • ...or putting a white sheet over their heads and saying "Wooooooooohhh" like a ghost!

Pumpkin treasure hunt

Here's a simple and fun Halloween party game for kids. Hide small pumpkins - either real or plastic - around the house or outside... and send the kids off to find them!

Each pumpkin could be labelled with a child's name - so the children have to find their own pumpkin. Add favors to the pumpkins if you like!

Halloween treasure

Use a sandpit to hide plastic snakes, spiders, stars... or whatever captures your imagination for Halloween! Blindfold each child, either one-by-one or in a group and let them hunt away!

Adapt more classic kid party games to Halloween

So - we have musical statues as Monster Statues above, as well as pin the tail on the donkey turning into pin the wart on the witch!

Let's take our inspiration from those traditional favorites to come up with additional ideas for Halloween party games for kids:

  • Pass the Parcel becomes Pass the Pumpkin
  • What's the Time Mister Wolf becomes What's the Time Mister Monster
  • Simon Says becomes Scary Sarah Says...

and so on. Check out my classic kids party games page for more ideas.

Halloween party games for kids: some tips for the little ones

trick or treat children
Don't forget that babies and small children can be very frightened by other kids rushing around in scary costumes and masks.

If you like, why not include some of my suggestions for harvest party games for kids?

If you can, keep things lighthearted for them; get everyone to wear fun animal costumes and use face paints too. This way, the little ones can get fully involved.

What can the tiny tots do?

Well, they'll love trick or treating with strictly family and friends. They can get busy with some kid-safe coloring, or "help" you make and decorate a pumpkin-pretty display for the entrance to your house.
