These first birthday party ideas are designed to make the planning of your baby's first birthday a breeze!
A first birthday party is like no other It's the first big birthday milestone, not to be repeated until your child reaches double figures at ten, or the teenage years at thirteen.
This will probably be the only birthday party your child may sleep through! And it's an occasion that is just as much for the rest of the family as it is for the birthday boy or girl.
With this in mind, here are my first birthday party ideas, giving you tips and insights into how this day can be made especially memorable.
Where should the party take place?
Two takes on this:
Host the party at home, where
everything is to hand
you know it's baby-proof
the weather doesn't matter
you're more relaxed
Celebrate outside
at a picnic
at a family restaurant
at a relative's house
An "at-home" party is often the easiest to organize If you are planning on offering food or organizing some special activities as suggested in my first birthday party ideas below, your house may be the ideal location. You can get everything ready before the party and you may feel more in control. If you are inviting other parents, babies and children, you won't be too worried about noise, mess, feeding or sleep needs.
Going out of the house, however, can be great fun too At the right time of year, a picnic in the park one afternoon can be just as enjoyable. If you are comfortable about going to a restaurant, make sure it is kid-friendly and that the service is efficient. And a Grandparent or Godparent may be thrilled about hosting this special occasion, if they are the understanding kind when it comes to child-proofing the party room!
So much depends on your outlook and family needs, as well as the activities you would like to include. Which brings us to the subject of...
First birthday party ideas - making it special
Star-studded ideas for making this party like no other!
First birthday invitations A special invitation to a first birthday can provide your guests with a ready-made memento of the occasion.
A video memory A first birthday party looks back just one year... so why not celebrate that year by putting together a short video of special moments from your baby's first year?
Record the day Don't forget to take pictures or recordings of your birthday baby on their special day.
A baby album You could start a family tradition by putting a selection of your favorite baby photographs in a small album. Build up your birthday photo collection as the years go by for a priceless memory for you and your child.
Vital statistics Use the album to record your baby's weight and length at birth. Then, when each birthday arrives, you can add the new vital statistics to that year's album!
Scrapbook it! If you're into scrapbooking, how about a "baby's first year" scrapbook? A personally produced record that is hard to beat! Make your scrapbook even more special by having guests write a message to baby in the final pages of the album. Don't forget to add photos of the birthday party and a special pose with just Mom and Dad.
First birthday gifts There are many "traditional" birthday gifts that can be kept as mementos. And for the day - fun baby toys, favors for guests, and maybe something special for you too? Why not?
The decorative touch Spice up the occasion with some fantastic first birthday decorations, many themed, that you can use to create a real sense of celebration.
The cake A first birthday cake is very special. And only one candle to light!

Keep things fun
As part of my section about first birthday party ideas, here's a brief checklist of safety considerations for you to bear in mind as you make your preparations.
Baby-proof electric sockets, sharp corners and cupboard doors
Candles are out apart from the cake!
Bursting balloons can frighten young children, so use with discretion
Use safety gates on stairs and a guard for the fireplace
Ensure your decorations are just that; keep them out of baby's reach
Dispose of wrapping carefully
Check with parents of young guests about allergies
If serving alcohol, be vigilant about who is drinking it!
