On this page you'll find Christmas party ideas for kids that'll keep those little ones busy! Discover fun ideas for Christmas crafts, Christmas cookery, game suggestions, and other fun activities, too.
You can easily plan a kids' Christmas party by jotting down the ideas that appeal to you and that suit the group of kids coming to your party. It's a good idea to choose a range of activities, and work out how much time each will last.
You could get the kids busy with some craft first, as guests arrive and you get everyone sorted out. Then move onto a simple Christmas food/cooking activity - then a game, then some eats... before finishing off with a story, video, some singsongs or another game.
A list of Christmas party activities
Let's get going with some simple Christmas craft ideas - ideal as an icebreaker at the start of your party.
Note - links to other sites open a new browser window:
1. Christmas stockings - there's a fantastically practical Paper Christmas Stocking from Enchanted Learning, which you can get the kids to make from scratch if you like. Alternatively, prepare enough stockings for the number of kids before the party, punch the holes around the edge - then let the kids weave the thread around the stocking and decorate it.
2. Santa sack - use the idea for the stocking above, but cut out a sack shape using red felt or card, and punch holes around the top only. The kids can then decorate them and fill with candy or favors to take home after the party.
3. Sticker Christmas tree - cut out Christmas tree shapes for your little guests. You'll find a good selection at DLTK's Christmas Tree Coloring Pages. Get the kids to color in their trees, then use Christmas themed stickers or scrapbook embellisments to decorate. Pin them up around your party room (make sure you label each tree with the name of the child who made it) and then the kids can collect them at the end of the party.
4. Merry Christmas bookmarks - either cut out bookmark shapes from cardstock and let the kids decorate them - or use a template such as these free printable Christmas bookmarks from Activity Village. The kids could make several if they're quick, and give them away as gifts - as in the next three Christmas party activities.
5. Christmas mug gift - purchase a set of brightly colored mugs, let the kids fill them with candy, tie a bow around them, and add a picture label/gift card for the recipient.
6. Gift box fun - pick up some small gift boxes, get the children to decorate them and pop in some gold-wrapped chocolate coins or small Christmas decorations - whatever takes your fancy! The children can gift these to moms, dads, or grandparents.
7. Handprint flag - prepare squares of white cardstock big enough for the children to put a handprint on. Use green or red fingerpaint to paint the kids' hands, then get them to pop their handprint onto their flag. What to do while the paint is drying? Well, why not prepare some large sticky labels that will fit onto the back of the flag - get the kids to decorate them with stickers or marker pens, adding their name and the date. When the flags are dry, help the children to peel the sticker off the backing paper and attach it to the other side of the flag. Then attach the flags to plastic or wooden sticks.
6. Cookie or cake decorating - prebake cookies or Christmas cupcakes, and let the kids decorate with sprinkles, candy buttons, icing and cake decoration Santas and snowmen!
7. Christmas coloring - young kids like nothing better than to sit at a table with a huge batch of coloring pens and pencils. Print out some free Christmas coloring pages or use pages from shop-bought Christmas coloring books, and let the kids just get on with it! Quite a good idea to have a coloring table handy at all times if your party is set to last quite a long time!
8. Christmas alphabet game - this Christmas party activity is great for kids and adults to play together. Give each pair or group a piece of paper, and get the adults to write the letters of the alphabet down the left hand side of the paper. The aim of the game is to think of a Christmas word for every letter of the alphabet! Give some examples first, or get the kids to give you some ideas to kick you all off. Then give a time limit - maybe ten minutes - and see who gets the most words!
Here are some ideas:
Angels Bells, baby, Bethlehem Candles, cranberry, cake Donkey, decorations Elves, eve Frosty, fir, fairy Gingerbread, greetings Holly, ho ho ho Icicle, inn Jingle bells, Jesus Kris Kringle! Lights, lantern Merry, mistletoe
9. More Christmas party games - check out my page all about Christmas party games, including
Guess what's in the Christmas stocking
Pin the star on the Christmas tree
Name that tune
Christmas match-up...
- as well as many more fun game ideas!
9. Christmas concert - if you have a toy microphone or even a karaoke set, play some Christmas music and let the kids sing along! Some children have no qualms about performing in front of an audience... others like to sit and watch. Some kids might want to sing something non-Christmassy - that's fine too! My son does a mean Beatles number, especially with a toy guitar... so let your imaginations fly with this one!
10. Christmas caroling - fab fun if you give the kids jingly bells to ring, kids and grown ups will really enjoy singing some of their favorite Christmas carols. Sing along to a tape, use the piano, or go outside with lanterns and treat the neighborhood to a mini carol concert. Useful to print out the words to the carols you intend to sing so that guests can sing along.
11. Christmas story time - depending on the childrens' age range, you may like to pick out a short Christmas story to read, while the kids all sit around you.
12. Christmas DVD - longer parties may necessitate entertaining kids with a fun DVD. We still have Barney's Night Before Christmas, which is great for small kids - I'm even looking forward to watching it again this year :)
I hope you enjoyed my selection of Christmas party activities for kids!
