Christmas party activities

Christmas Games for Kids » Christmas Party Activities

There are lots of wonderful activities for kids that'll keep those little Christmas kids busy!

You can easily plan a kids' Christmas party by jotting down the ideas that appeal to you and that suit the group of kids coming to your party.

It's a good idea to choose a range of activities, and work out how much time each will last.

You could get the kids busy with some craft first, as guests arrive and you get everyone sorted out. Then move onto a simple Christmas food/cooking activity - then a game, then some eats... before finishing off with a story, video, some singsongs or another game.

Easy Christmas gift bag craft

christmas gift bag craft
You will need a set of small plain color gift bags, old Christmas cards or Christmassy pictures from magazines, stickers if you like too, and some kid glue and scissors.

You can prepare goodies to put into the bag: Christmas napkins, a bookmark, mini calendar, notebook, pencil, candy, fruit, or a Christmas tree decoration.

Kids cut out Christmas pictures and stick them onto the bag. Then they choose some goodies, and arrange them nicely :)

Tip: Write each child's name onto their bag when finished - this saves confusion later!

Make an easy angel concertina card/decoration!

Christmas angel craft
Print my Christmas angels printable - this link opens a new window for you.

Kids cut out around the four angels, and color them in.

Then with a little help if necessary, they fold the angels into a concertina.

Great to turn into a card for someone, or simply as a decoration!

Tip: If four angels is too many, prepare cut-outs of either two or three angels for the little ones.

Bonus tip! Older kids might like to cut out each angel individually, color it in. Punch a hole above each angel's head and thread each angel onto a piece of ribbon. Tie a knot - and hey presto, you have an angel Christmas tree decoration!

Christmas mug craft for kids

christmas mug craft for kids
Here's another super simple activity.

You'll need a mug for each child - I've used a plastic one here - and ribbon, card/construction paper, some stickers, candies, cookies, and kid-safe fun little ornaments.

You can tie a ribbon round each mug beforehand if you like, as this can be a bit fiddly.

First of all, the kids cut out a little rectangular bookmark shape from thick card, and add a sticker at the top to decorate. Then they can slot it behind the ribbon.

Fill the mug with a choice of candies, cookies, or other goodies. I've added a little hedgehog to ours :)

Print and color a Christmas bookmark

Cut out bookmark shapes from cardstock and let the kids decorate them - or use a template such as these free printable Christmas bookmarks from Activity Village - this link opens a new browser window.

Kids can make several if they're quick. They're really useful for your gift bag or mug above - and for the gift box below!

Gift box craft

This is a similar idea to the bag above.

Pick up some small gift boxes, get the children to decorate them and pop in some gold-wrapped chocolate coins or small Christmas decorations - whatever takes your fancy! The children can gift these to moms, dads, or grandparents.

They can write a message on a gift label and stick that on the box lid, too. Just make sure the kids can fit the lid on their box before they do this!

Handprint flag

handprint flag
Prepare squares of white cardstock big enough for the children to put a handprint on.

Use green or red fingerpaint to paint the kids' hands, then get them to pop their handprint onto their flag.

What to do while the paint is drying? Well, why not prepare some large sticky peel-off labels that will fit onto the back of the flag - get the kids to decorate them with stickers or marker pens, adding their name and the date.

Then the flags are dry, help the children to peel the sticker off the backing paper and attach it to the other side of the flag. Then attach the flags to plastic or wooden sticks/dowel, or even sturdy drinking straws.

Sticker Christmas tree

Cut out Christmas tree shapes for your little guests. You'll find a good selection at DLTK's Christmas Tree Coloring Pages. Get the kids to color in their trees, then use Christmas themed stickers or scrapbook embellisments to decorate. Pin them up around your party room (make sure you label each tree with the name of the child who made it) and then the kids can collect them at the end of the party.

Cookie or cake decorating

Prebake cookies or Christmas cupcakes, and let the kids decorate with sprinkles, candy buttons, icing and cake decoration Santas and snowmen!

Christmas alphabet game

This Christmas party activity is great for kids and adults to play together.

Give each pair or group a piece of paper, and get the adults to write the letters of the alphabet down the left hand side of the paper.

The aim of the game is to think of a Christmas word for every letter of the alphabet! Give some examples first, or get the kids to give you some ideas to kick you all off. Then give a time limit - maybe ten minutes - and see who gets the most words!

Here are some ideas:

Angels
Bells, baby, Bethlehem
Candles, cranberry, cake
Donkey, decorations
Elves, eve
Frosty, fir, fairy
Gingerbread, greetings
Holly, ho ho ho
Icicle, inn
Jingle bells, Jesus
Kris Kringle!
Lights, lantern
Merry, mistletoe
Noel, nutcracker
Ornaments
Presents, plum pud
Quilt
Rudolph, reindeer
Stocking, star, shepherds
Tree, tinsel, turkey
Unwrap presents!
Visitors
Wreath, white Christmas
Xxxx... kisses!
Yule log
Zzzzz... sleeping baby

Christmas concert

- if you have a toy microphone or even a karaoke set, play some Christmas music and let the kids sing along! Some children have no qualms about performing in front of an audience... others like to sit and watch. Some kids might want to sing something non-Christmassy - that's fine too! My son does a mean Beatles number, especially with a toy guitar... so let your imaginations fly with this one!

Christmas caroling

Fab fun if you give the kids jingly bells to ring, kids and grown ups will really enjoy singing some of their favorite Christmas carols.

Sing along to a tape, use the piano, or go outside with lanterns and treat the neighborhood to a mini carol concert. Useful to print out the words to the carols you intend to sing so that guests can sing along.

Christmas story time

Depending on the childrens' age range, you may like to pick out a short Christmas story to read, while the kids all sit around you.

Christmas DVD

Longer parties may necessitate entertaining kids with a fun DVD. We still have Barney's Night Before Christmas, which is great for small kids - I'm even looking forward to watching it again this year :)

I hope you enjoyed my selection of Christmas party activities for kids!
